Hope in the Heat Initiative works through integrated programs that connect climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods, refugee leadership, protection, education, and community-led advocacy.
Climate and Livelihood Interventions
Climate and Livelihood Interventions are the flagship program of Hope in the Heat Initiative. This program responds to the growing impact of climate change, environmental degradation, and economic vulnerability in Uganda’s refugee-hosting districts.
Communities in areas such as Adjumani, Yumbe, Kiryandongo, Lamwo, Obongi, Kyegegwa, Isingiro, and Madi Okollo are experiencing drought, erratic rainfall, declining soil fertility, deforestation, reduced agricultural production, and increased pressure on natural resources. These challenges affect both refugee and host communities, especially women and girls who often spend long hours collecting firewood and water.

Expected Change
Through this program, HIH aims to restore degraded landscapes, improve food security, increase household incomes, reduce dependence on unsustainable natural resources, and strengthen long-term climate resilience.
Localization and Advocacy
HIH believes that refugees and host communities should not only be beneficiaries of programs. They should be active leaders, decision-makers, and co-creators of solutions.
The Localization and Advocacy program strengthens refugee-led participation in climate, humanitarian, and development decision-making spaces. It focuses on shifting power closer to affected communities and ensuring that policies, programs, and resources are informed by lived experience.

Expected Change
Through advocacy and localization, HIH works to ensure that refugee and host communities are recognized as active climate actors with the knowledge, leadership, and experience needed to shape inclusive climate solutions.
Gender and Protection
Climate change and displacement affect people differently. Women and girls often face increased protection risks due to firewood scarcity, water shortages, economic stress, and limited access to safe spaces and services.
The Gender and Protection program promotes safety, dignity, equal participation, and community-based protection for women, men, girls, and boys in refugee and host communities. Special attention is given to the vulnerabilities faced by women and girls in displacement and climate-affected settings.

Education and Sports
Books and Balls: Together We Build Hope
Many refugee children and youth have strong academic, digital, and athletic potential, but their opportunities are limited by displacement, poverty, lack of safe spaces, limited equipment, and few pathways for talent development.
Through Books and Balls: Together We Build Hope, HIH seeks to create safe, inclusive spaces where refugee children and youth can learn, play, build confidence, develop digital skills, and grow their talents. The program combines sports, education, mentorship, digital learning, and youth leadership.
What We Focus On
- Basketball, volleyball, and football training
- Certified coaching and life-skills mentorship
- Computer labs and internet access E-learning spaces for secondary and university students
- Digital literacy and vocational skills training
- Talent identification and development pathways
- Connections to clubs, academies, schools, universities, and scholarship opportunities
Expected Change
HIH believes that talent should never be limited by displacement. Through education and sports, the program aims to support school retention, child protection, gender equality, youth leadership, employment pathways, and access to higher education.
