Books and Balls: Building Hope Through Education and Sports

Books and Balls connects education, sports, mentorship, and digital learning to help refugee children and youth build confidence, skills, and hope beyond displacement.

Displacement should never be the end of a child’s dream. Across refugee settlements, many children and young people have talent, ambition, and potential, but they often lack safe spaces, learning support, equipment, mentorship, and clear pathways to grow.

Hope in the Heat Initiative’s Books and Balls: Together We Build Hope program responds to this gap by connecting education, sports, digital learning, life skills, and talent development.

The idea is simple but powerful: children and youth need safe spaces where they can learn, play, build confidence, develop skills, and imagine a future beyond displacement. Sports such as basketball, volleyball, and football can create discipline, teamwork, leadership, and hope. Education and digital skills can open doors to employment, higher learning, and long-term opportunity.

Through this program, HIH aims to support Smart Talent Centers that provide sports training, coaching, mentorship, computer labs, internet access, e-learning spaces, digital literacy, and pathways to scholarships and professional opportunities.

Talent should never be limited by displacement. With the right support, refugee children and youth can become leaders, professionals, athletes, innovators, and change-makers in their communities.
